Written assignments
Written assignments must be completed and submitted individually. All assignments should be in
English. Collaboration is permitted only as described in the
Guidelines for compulsory assignments and the
Honor code.The
deadlines for submitting assignments are
hard, i.e., you should submit the assignments
by the specified date. To submit, drop off your solution in the box outside the department.
First written assignment
(Due September 19, 13:00 -- 40 points)
Second written assignment
(Due October 3, 14:00 -- 30 points)
Third written assignment
(Due October 17, 13:30 -- 30 points)
Programming projects
The first programming project (
Java RMI) must be completed and submitted individually.
The second and third projects must be completed in groups of two students. It is important that
you choose your group early in the course because the second and third projects will require a
lot of work. Send an email to 5dv147(at)cs.umu and/or 5dv147-staff(at)cs.umu.se if you
can't find a partner. Those students without a group by September 12 will be assigned randomly to
one group. Send us an email (5dv147-staff(at)cs.umu.se) once you have a group.
Late submissions will be penalized by
reducing 10% of the final score for each late working day.
Notice that you will not receive any points if you submit after two weeks of the deadline. To
submit, drop off the project report in the box outside the department, place your code in the
appropriate subdirectory in your home directory (
~your-home-directory/edu/5dv147/),
and send us a tarball or zip file to 5dv147-staff(at)cs.umu.se. All project reports should be in English.
More detail about the project reports will be provided later (with the description of the projects).
Similarly to the written assignments, collaboration is permitted as long as it is within the limits
described in the
Guidelines for compulsory assignments and the
Honor code. Notice
that the first document clearly specifies what is and what is not allowed.

Work completed in previous years
The content of this course is similar,
but not equal to the content of the old
distributed systems course 5DV020. Thus, we are going to use the following rules to transfer work
accomplished for 5DV020 in the new evaluation structure of 5DV147.
- If you approved the written evaluation from 5DV020 and would like to transfer the score into 5DV147.
Since the content of 5DV147 is different, you will be required to answer some questions from assignment
2 of 5DV147. You will need to talk with us at the appropriate moment, both so that we let you know which
questions to answer and also to explain you how your final score for the written assignment will be
calculated
- If you approved the first programming project from 5DV020 you will not have to do the first
programming project of 5DV147.
- If you approved the second programming project from 5DV020 you will not have to do the second
programming project of 5DV147.
