It's Getting Hot

I've put up another simple background image. It is the result of doing some simple calculations on how heat spreads in a rectangular grid. Here the bottom edge is set to a constant high temperature while the other edges are set to a constant low temperature. Looks kinda neat I think.

hs-uuid

Put up a small Haskell library I've been messing around with for a few days. Called hs-uuid, it is currently able to generate version 1 and 4 UUIDs as specified in RFC-4122. Well, for the version 1 UUIDs it doesn't use a node field based on a IEEE 802 MAC address but rather places random data there (except for the broadcast/multicast bit which is enabled).

Master's Thesis

Realised that I haven't mentioned that I've finished my master's thesis. It's called A Categorical Approach to Logics and Logic Homomorphisms and might be of interest to those with a morbid facination of theoretical computing science :-)

Gimp Goodness

Got a patch accepted for the next stable series of GIMP so after it is released and you are rapidly – and happily – switching back and forth between your current and previous zoom level send me a thought :-)

By the way, the new stable series seems to become really nice and it contains a lot of user interface polish. I definitely recommend checking it out once the release has been made.

Pretty

I think today's Astronomy Picture of the Day is particularly nice.

@*&^%$$ spammers

Seems like some unpleasant person has taken the liberty of sending tons of stock pumping scam mail with various fake rycee.net addresses as the from envelope address. Let's just say that I'm not very happy about this.

Lose an 'r', win a byte

Yesterday I happened to think about the referer[sic] HTTP request field. This misspelling has caused almost every HTTP request since the beginning of time to be one byte smaller than it otherwise would. Pretty interesting, I wonder how many bytes this represents in total. I suspect it is of considerable size. Perhaps I'll do some math on it someday.

Congrats to Bas and Johan

I saw in my feed reader that my buddy Bas has put his PhD thesis online. That reminded me that I haven't publicly congratulated him on it. So congrats mate! Also thanks for mentioning me in the preface, it certainly wasn't required for my humble proof-reading contributions.

Also congratulations goes to Johan who got engaged a while back. Neat!

Oops

Sorry about being so horribly bad at updating the site. Suffice to say that I've been keeping myself busy. Once I'm done with my master's thesis I will become more dilligent about informing anybody unfortunate enough to end up here about all sorts of things that happen :-)

'nother ride

I've finally finished fixing up my touring bike, got done late last night. It looks beautiful now, I hope whoever buys the bike will be nice to it. I put a brand new LX crankset, cassette and chain on it. I like the lumbering feel of it, a very solid ride.

Today I went for a 90km road ride, I planned on going much further but when I ran into 10km of ripped up road all energy was sucked right out of me. You can see in the map below, at the top I ran into the ripped up road and then I had to backtrack quite a bit before finding an alternative road. Other than that it was wonderful. I'll do a longer ride some other time, and then I'll check for road constructions when planning the route.
