Obtaining the PDF viewer:

To read PDF files, you may need Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 or later, if your web browser does not support reading of PDF files directly. Fortunately, this reader is available for most popular platforms for free from Adobe at http://www.adobe.com/ (Support for PDF should be installed on all computers in the laboratories of the Department of Computing Science, but you may need to download and install it if you wish to read these files on other computers.)

Printing PDF files via the Netscapte plug-in:

Important Note: It has been pointed out that Netscape Navigator will crash if one attempts to print a PDF file from it. The workaround is to save the PDF file to disk, and then to print the disk file directly from the Acrobat reader. This is a bit annoying, but until Netscape fixes this bug, there is little that we can do.

Configuring Netscape under UNIX for PDF:

If you are running Netscape Navigator under UNIX, and it is not able to handle PDF files properly, do the following:

    1. In the Options menu, click on General Preferences and then on the Helpers tab.
    2. If there is an entry with Description field application/pdf, edit the Handle By field to be /usr/local/bin/acroread %s. (Highlight the entry, and then click on the Edit… button to the right.)
    3. If there is no entry with the Description application/pdf, create one using the New… button to the right. The Handle By field should as defined in item 2.
