Student Conference: Some Notes on Plagiarism
Make sure to read and understand the following
Plagiarism is the "re-use in one paper of material that has
appeared in another, without appropriate acknowledgement" (Zobel,
2004, p 217).
A few clarifications to the quotation from our course textbook (Zobel,
2004) above:
- materials can be anything, like texts,
programs, designs, ideas, phrases, illustrations, pictures, etc.;
even parts of such materials in either their
original form or just rearranged;
- another can be anything, like a book, journal, web
page, another students work, etc.; it does not even need to be in
written form.
Copying materials as stated above, without the consent of the
owner or copyright holder, is as illegal as copying music or movies.
The plain fact that materials are available for viewing on the
Internet does NOT mean it is legal to copy and use them.
Make sure to read and understand the department's
Honour Code. The Honour Code will be
discussed in class and we will enforce academic integrity.
