Eight postdoctoral stipends in autonomous systems
The Kempe Foundations have granted two years of funding for eight postdoctoral researchers in autonomous systems in a project lead by Erik Elmroth. Autonomous systems consist of software and infrastructure that together with humans provide increased functionality, sustainability, and efficiency for society, such as self-driving cars, industry robots, and socially intelligent computer systems that can help people in their everyday life. Two of the stipends are focusing on autonomous management of clouds. See article for more information.
Gonzalo Rodrigo in the SC15 Mentor-Protégé programme
Gonzalo Rodrigo takes part in the SC15 International Mentor-Protégé programme, where he has been paired-up with Associate Professor Alexandru Iosup from TU Delft as his mentor. The program is organized as part of the world's major supercomputing event, the SC conference series. For an article about that mentorship, please read here.
Johan Tordsson awarded the Nordea Scientific Prize
On October 22nd, Johan Tordsson was awarded the Nordea Scientific Prize. The award is provided by Nordea’s Norrland Foundation and includes a monetary award of 100 000 SEK. The award ceremony was preceded by an award lecture earlier the same day.
RECAP and ACTiCLOUD - Two New EU H2020 Projects
The EU has decided to fund two projects in which the research group takes part. The 4.6 m Euro project RECAP (Reliable Capacity Provisioning and Enhanced Remediation for Distributed Cloud Applications) includes 9 partners and is coordinated by University of Ulm, Germany. The 4.7 m Euro project ACTiCLOUD (ACTivating resource efficiency and large databases in the CLOUD) includes 8 partners and is coordinated by the National Technical University of Athens, Greece. Both projects are for three years and are expected to start in early 2017.
Olumuyiwa Ibidunmoye - Ph.Lic Defense
On the 24th of May 2016, Olumuyiwa Ibidunmoye defended his Ph licentiate thesis entitled "Performance Problem Diagnosis in Cloud Infrastructures. Discussion leader was Giuliano Casale, Imperial College, London, UK.
The 9th Cloud Control Workshop
The 9th Cloud Control Workshop is organized at Friiberghs Herrgård just north of Stockholm Arlanda airport, on June 27-29, 2016 open to invited participants from all over the world (http://www.cloudresearch.org/workshops/9th/).
Kick-off for the WASP Graduate School
The Graduate School of the Wallenberg Autonomous Systems Program (WASP), in which the group takes part, holds its kick-of at Linköping University on April 7-8, 2016.
The 8th Cloud Control Workshop
The 8th Cloud Control Workshop was organized in a small format, open only for the original Cloud Control project members, in Lövångers Kyrkstad, just north of Umeå, on February 1-3, 2016 (http://www.cloudresearch.org/workshops/8th/).
Mina Sedaghat - Ph.D Defense
On the 21st of January 2016, Mina Sedaghat will defend her PhD thesis entitled Cluster Scheduling and Management for Large-Scale Compute Clouds. Faculty Opponent is Professor Omer Rana, Cardiff University, UK.
The Wallenberg Autonomous Systems Program (WASP)
The first of January 2016 is the starting date for the research activities in The Wallenberg Autonomous Systems Program (WASP), which with a budget of 1.8 billion SEK over ten years is the largest ever research program in Sweden. Funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation, the program addresses the field of autonomous system in general with The Autonomous Cloud as one out of six initial projects. Umeå University is one partner in WASP and initially, the Distributed Systems group receives funding for one PhD student and one young researcher.
Ahmed Ali-ElDin - Ph.D Defense
On the 2nd of October 2015, Ahmed Ali-ElDin defended his PhD thesis entitled Workload Characterization, Controller Design, and Performance Evaluation for Cloud Capacity Autoscaling. Ewnetu Bayuh Lakew - Ph.D Defense
On the 28th of September 2015, Ewnetu Bayuh Lakew defended his PhD thesis entitled Autonomous Cloud Resource Provisioning: Accounting, Allocation, and Performance Modeling. The 7th Cloud Control Workshop
We organize the 7th Cloud Control Workshop in Nässlingen, Stockholm Archipelago, on June 9-11, 2015 (http://www.cloudresearch.org/workshops/7th/).
Umeå University takes part in organizing the 8th International Workshop on Virtualization Technologies in Distributed Computing (VTDC-2015) to he held at HPDC 2015 (http://www.hpdc.org/2015/), in Portland Oregon on June 15-19, 2015, with Erik Elmroth being the Programme Chair.

The 6th Cloud Control Workshop
The 6th edition of our Cloud Control Workshop series was held in London on December 8, in conjunction with the 7th IEEE/ACM Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing (UCC 2014). For the first time, the Cloud Control Workshop was open to the public for participation (not by invitation only). Besides contributed papers, the workshop also included keynote presentations by Adrian Cockcroft (Battery Ventures), John Wilkes (Google), and Ant Rowstron (Microsoft Research). Best paper award at CAC 2014
The group members Luis Tomás, Cristian Klein, Johan Tordsson, Francisco Hernández-Rodríguez received the best paper award at The International Conference on Cloud and Autonomic Computing (CAC 2014, September 8-12, 2014) for their paper The straw that broke the camel’s back: safe cloud overbooking with application brownout.

ORBIT and CACTOS - Two New EU FP7 Projects
October 1, 2013 was the starting date for two new EU PF7 projects with the Umeå University research group in distributed systems as a partner. The projects are ORBIT - Business Continuity as a Service and CACTOS - Context-Aware Cloud Topology Optimisation and Simulation.

Cloudberry Project Started
Formally started on the 1st of July, 2013, Cloudberry is a project focusing on resource efficiency and green ICT technology where our research group is one of the partners. Other partners include Ericsson, Metria, and Luleå University of Technology.

VISION Cloud Project Initiated
On the 1st of October, 2010, a new cloud project was initiated. The VISION Cloud project focuses on innovative cloud storage services with strong media-focused business cases. The challenges include a huge dimension, rich medatada and time-critical workflows. For more information, see the VISION project page.
The OPTIMIS Project Takes off
Starting from the 1st of June, 2010, the OPTIMIS project which includes our research group is officially started. The project is a EU FP7 project focusing on hybrid cloud models where a multitude of providers are available, and automated tools to make decisions and manage th placement of VM resources in hybrid deployment models. eSSENCE Project Started
eSSENCE is a strategic collaborative research programme in e-science between three Swedish universities with a strong tradition of excellent e-science research: Uppsala University, Lund University and Umeå University. The project has formally started at the 1st of January, 2010. More information can be found at the eSSENCE project page.

UMIT Research Lab Initiated
On the 1st of August, 2009 the UMIT Research Lab was initiated. The lab is an environment for research in computational science and engineering with focus on industrial applications and challenges of simulation technology, where the group will take part.
