Distributed Systems

Distributed systems, including clouds and grids

The Umeå University distributed systems' research focuses flexible and scalable IT infrastructures for the digitized society. Target infrastructures span from single large-scale cloud datacenters, via federations of clouds, to the highly distributed clouds that potentially may become the backbone for the full-fledged Internet-of-Things (IoT).

Research drivers are compute and data intensive applications requiring, e.g., elastic locality-aware infrastructures to meet the rapid capacity and locality variations of industrial services and large-scale distributed environments that enable coordinated use of federated resources for eScience applications, and machine-to-machine applications in the IoT context.

Research outcomes include autonomous infrastructure management systems and sophisticated tools for creating cloud-enabled applications. Central to the approach are software with flexibility in deployment and policy customization, providing key functionality for broad sets of usage scenarios.

Cloud Control Workshops

We have established the Cloud Control Workshops. For past and upcoming events, see cloudresearch.org/workshops/

Olumuyiwa Ibidunmoye - Ph.Lic Defense
On the 24th of May 2016, Olumuyiwa Ibidunmoye defended his Ph licentiate thesis entitled "Perormance Problem Diagnosis in Cloud Infrastructures. Discussion leader was Giuliano Casale, Imperial College, London, UK.

The 9th Cloud Control Workshop
The 9th Cloud Control Workshop is organized at Friiberghs Herrgård just north of Stockholm Arlanda airport, on June 27-29, 2016 open to invited participants from all over the world (http://www.cloudresearch.org/workshops/9th/).

Kick-off for the WASP Graduate School
The Graduate School of the Wallenberg Autonomous Systems Program (WASP), in which the group takes part, holds its kick-of at Linköping University on April 7-8, 2016.

The 8th Cloud Control Workshop
The 8th Cloud Control Workshop was organized in a small format, open only for the original Cloud Control project members, in Lövångers Kyrkstad, just north of Umeå, on February 1-3, 2016 (http://www.cloudresearch.org/workshops/8th/).

Mina Sedaghat - Ph.D Defense
On the 21st of January 2016, Mina Sedaghat will defend her PhD thesis entitled Cluster Scheduling and Management for Large-Scale Compute Clouds. Faculty Opponent is Professor Omer Rana, Cardiff University, UK.

The Wallenberg Autonomous Systems Program (WASP)
The first of January 2016 is the starting date for the research activities in The Wallenberg Autonomous Systems Program (WASP), which with a budget of 1.8 billion SEK over ten years is the largest ever research program in Sweden. Funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation, the program addresses the field of autonomous system in general with The Autonomous Cloud as one out of six initial projects. Umeå University is one partner in WASP and initially, the Distributed Systems group receives funding for one PhD student and one young researcher.

Ahmed Ali-ElDin - Ph.D Defense
On the 2nd of October 2015, Ahmed Ali-ElDin defended his PhD thesis entitled Workload Characterization, Controller Design, and Performance Evaluation for Cloud Capacity Autoscaling. Faculty Opponent was Professor Prashant Shenoy, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, USA. A video of the whole defense is available here.

Ewnetu Bayuh Lakew - Ph.D Defense
On the 28th of September 2015, Ewnetu Bayuh Lakew defended his PhD thesis entitled Autonomous Cloud Resource Provisioning: Accounting, Allocation, and Performance Modeling. Faculty Opponent was Associate Professor Hiaohui (Helen) Gu, North Carolina State University, USA. A video of the whole defense is available here.
