User, Interaction and Knowledge Modelling
The Umeå University research on personalised knowledge-based intelligent systems is covering research projects with the objective to develop methods and technology, demonstrated in prototype implementations for supporting the individual in the activities of their choice. For the purpose, a particular focus is put on the design and modeling of the user interaction and knowledge content of interactive, intelligent and autonomous systems and environments.

Research is conducted in areas at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Human-Computer Interaction with emphasis on interaction design of knowledge-based systems. Topics like multi-initiative (autonomous) systems, intelligent user interfaces, user-driven development, knowledge and user modeling, personalization, argumentation, multi-agent systems and semantic web techniques are central. Research is focusing on the design and evaluation of methods, algorithms and software for decision-support in complex knowledge domains that promote development of users’ knowledge and skills in collaborative intelligent environments.
A major goal is to facilitate autonomy and optimize skills in individuals in performing computer-supported activity in their daily life. In order to accomplish this, a user and activity-centered design methodology working towards supporting e.g., patient-centric care and a holistic perspective on an individual's situation is applied. Evaluation of prototypes using formative and situated methods is central. Consequently, potential end users and stakeholders play a key role in the projects. They enable and realize the user-driven development methods and tools that we develop by developing knowledge-based support applications following their envisioned future practice/activity. Their specific skills and knowledge in professional domains supplement the group's competence in computing science, cognitive science, ergonomics and occupational rehabilitation.
The Laboratory for Research on Intelligent, Interactive Environments
The Human-Intelligent Environment Interaction Research laboratory is used for experimenting on various topics related to interacting with intelligent, autonomous and social environments for work, daily living activities or leisure activities. The lab contains a smart home environment with embedded sensors and NAO robots, and a number of prototype applications for different purposes related to activity and complex decision-support in every day/work activities.
