The Department of Computing Science (http://www.cs.umu.se/english/) is a dynamic department with more than 90 employees from nearly 20 different countries. We conduct research on a broad range of topics in the area of Computing Science. We also offer a broad selection of courses and study programs at bachelor, master, and doctoral level. The research at the Department is internationally well established, and is motivated both by fundamental questions and application needs within different areas. We develop new theory and methods as well as realize results in new state-of-the-art software.

The research group in Parallel and High-Performance Computing focuses on algorithms, tools, software libraries with applications for scalable high-performance computer systems. The group has received several prestigious grants from funding sources such as the Swedish Research Council, eSSENCE, a strategic collaborative research programme in e-Science 
(http://essenceofescience.se/efficient-and-reliable-hpc-algorithms-for-matrix-computations), and the European Frame Research Programmes, and coordinates the currently running H2020 FETHPC project NLAFET (http://www.nlafet.eu). 

The new position gives several opportunities; one important role with large freedom is to further develop the area of high performance computing (HPC) at the Department.

Collaboration with or an active role in leadership within the national center for scientific and parallel computing, HPC2N (http://www.hpc2n.umu.se), is also an opportunity. HPC2N provides a wide spectrum of services ranging from internationally competitive Tier-1-type HPC resources and e-Infrastructure, including effective mass-storage solutions, to education and user training programs. A new heterogeneous Peta-scale system has recently been procured. The new system includes multi-core CPUs nodes, accelerators and nodes using integrated many-core CPUs as well as a portion of fat nodes (3TB memory per node), and is a highly relevant platform for HPC.

There are several strong research groups at the department that offers potential research cooperation and synergies, including the Distributed Systems Group that addresses the intelligent and autonomic management of resources in compute clouds and software-defined infrastructures, the Matrix Computations Group that studies algorithms for complex numerical problems and the Computational Design Optimization Group. All mentioned groups are also part of UMIT Research Lab (http://www.org.umu.se/umit/english/).
